We at MSF would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family of AA Gill and our gratitude for all that he did to shed light on the often desperate situations people faced around the world.

Adrian was an irreplaceable friend to us; he shared our outrage at injustices, our despair at the suffering we witnessed and passion for doing all that we can to relieve that suffering.

He visited us all over the world. From his first trip in 1998 to our therapeutic feeding clinic in the area that is now South Sudan – established in response to the malnutrition crisis – he so eloquently stated: “It is not staring at the face of starvation that thuds like a blow to your heart. It is having starvation stare back.”

He visited an MSF hospital in a refugee camp on the border of Chad during the war in Darfur in 2004, where he sat with a mother and her baby in our waiting room: “At the edge of coping, there was very little this woman could do for her child, she had nothing left to give. No more milk, no more protection, no more security or hope.”

Earlier this year, Adrian visited the Calais ‘Jungle’. He saw the world as we do, that simply providing medical care where it is needed most can be the answer: “At the margin of life, when all the options are spent, what's important is the simple and practical.”

With our deepest sympathies,

The staff at MSF UAE
